Giving a New Life to an Esparto Stool

We absolutely adore esparto stools. They add such a decorative touch to any country home or rustic setting! Whether as bedside tables, tall stools for kitchen islands, or low ones to add extra seating around a coffee table…

We love scouring flea markets and street bazaars to discover stools with an extra layer of character and breathe new life into them. The common challenge we often face is worn-out esparto seats. Most are frayed, torn, or unsafe.

The craft we’re suggesting is an opportunity to easily refurbish these esparto seats, requiring only a leisurely moment on a lazy summer afternoon.

Curious to find out how?

Materials Needed for the seat:

  • Cotton backpack ribbon 100% P.Manubens 180 (30mm wide).
    • Color 736: Toasted beige
    • Color 2: Black
  • Stool structure.
  • Scissors.
  • Upholstery stapler.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Upholster the Stool Seat:

1.-Measure the width and height of the stool seat base and calculate the ribbon pieces needed to cover the base.

2.-Cut the ribbon strips to a length sufficient for upholstering the stool.

3.-Using an upholstery stapler, secure the strips to one end of the wood.

4.-When reaching the other end, staple the ribbons. Ensure they are well-tensioned and secured.

Also, staple them from the bottom and well-hidden so no finishes are visible.

5.-Take another color of ribbon and start weaving one over the other to create a woven pattern. Ensure it is as tight and tense as possible.

6.-Repeat the process of stapling the ribbons to the wood.

And there you have it—the stool is now ready to be placed wherever you desire!

We’ve chosen trendy colors, toasted beige, and black, to complement any decor and style. Of course, you can always switch these colors for your favorites. Just find them in the Manubens catalog.

Want an extra tip? Give it a coat of wax for a satin finish or a bit of walnut-colored wax to revive the aged patina. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!
