We propose this kitchen apron: a very easy activity that you can do if you want to start in the world of sewing and surprise the chef of the house with a handmade gift. Are you up for it?
In the step-by-step guide, we explain how to cut and sew this beautiful apron, which you can customize to your liking. Do you want to use some scrap fabric you have forgotten at the bottom of the drawer? Or perhaps you prefer to buy some linen fabric similar to ours?
To help you with this DIY using fabric ribbons, we attach the pattern with the cutting measurements. Shall we begin?
Materials you need to make the handmade apron
- 5 meters of Manubens herringbone tape: P117, width 28mm, and color 44
- 1 meter of linen fabric
- Scissors
- Needles and thread
- Sewing machine
Step 1. Cut the fabric
Cut the apron according to the pattern, with the fabric folded. Leave enough margin for the seams. The excess fabric will later be used to make the pocket.
Step 2. Cut the finishing strips for the bib, sides, and ties
Cut two strips of 50 x 4 cm bias from the fabric to finish the bib.
The finishing strips will be made with herringbone tape. You need to cut:
- 1 strip of 35 cm to finish the pocket.
- 2 strips of 28 cm to finish the upper part of the bib.
- 2 strips of 10 cm for the rings.
- 2 strips of 50 cm to finish the sides of the bottom part.
- 2 strips of 150 cm for the tying tapes.
Step 3. Sew the fabric rings to tie the apron
Now we are working on the interior part of the apron. Sew the 10cm strips folded inward. Place them in the corners as shown in the image. These strips will be the rings through which you can pass the long tapes to tie the apron, thus avoiding making eyelets.
Step 4. Finish the interior
Sew the 50cm herringbone tape strips on the sides to make the finishes and reinforce.
Step 5. The bib part
Sew the strips of fabric cut on the bias on the sides of the bib. It should look like in the second image.
Place the 150cm strips at each corner of the bib (leaving margin for sewing). Above these, place the finishes of the upper part of the bib, the two pieces of herringbone tape that are left of 28cm, which also serves to hide the strips and beautify this part. The topstitch can now be sewn.
Step 6. The hem of the apron
Now you can sew the hem. The apron is almost finished!
Step 7. The pocket of our handmade apron
Sew a 35 cm herringbone tape strip to adorn the top of the pocket.
Finish the bottom with bias tape.
Center the pocket and sew it to the front.
And you’ve finished the apron!
